An irregular pulse is commonly due to sinus arrhythmia, extrasystoles or atrial fibrillation, and less frequently to dropped beats, to atrial flutter with varying block or to rarer causes. An electrocardiogram is sometimes required for differentiation.
Pulse Deficit. This term signifies a difference between the heart rate as recorded by auscultation and the pulse rate as counted at the wrist. It may be a feature of extrasystoles and of atrial fibrillation and is discussed under these headings.
By pulse volume is meant the amplitude of expansile movement of the vessel wall during the passage of the pulse wave. The pulse volume provides a useful clinical estimate of the left ventricular output per beat (stroke volume). It is modified by vasomotor tone and local conditions such as a sclerotic or anatomically small artery.
