It is important to avoid accidental intravenous administration, especially when injecting procaine benzylpenicillin intramuscularly as this may result in a very severe disturbance consisting of a sensation of impending death, paraesthesiae and confusion lasting up to an hour and followed by exhaustion and anxiety for several days.
The skin may be hypersensitive to the application of an antibiotic and this is usually the result of previous contact with the substance. Such hypersensitivity to penicillin is so frequently encountered that its routine use as an ointment is contraindicated in the common pyodermias, such as impetigo and folliculitis.
