HIV/AIDS Affected Woman

26-years old HIV/AIDS affected woman from the Asian hospital was interviewed on 11-4-02 her husband has died. She was married at 17 years. He was a goldsmith who had gone to Signapore. She said he suffered from tuberculosis even before marriage. She said that she in laws had cheated her. They were aware of his disease but kept it as a secret from her. She in laws carried out her blood test in a very secret way. She has only one child. They are a resident of Cheiyyar. Her inlaws say her husband had the habit of going o tourist spots. He used to go with friends to enjoy life and that had made them suspect his fidelity.

She says suddenly her husband had a change of form, he had tuberculosis and all of a sudden he became dark and had lost weight so she was frightened to be with him. Her child is also affected with him. Child is also affected with HIV/AIDS. She adds that she was tested for HIV/AIDS when she had regular attacks of fever. Her mothers had suspected that her daughter would have acquired the disease from her late son-in-law.

She feels that it was unfortunate that she had lived with her husband only for five years. She also expressed that when she came to know of her disease she had a high heart beat and wept bitterly. After her husband’s death only she was aware of HIV/AIDS through the advertisements.

What Happens in the Class

It is obvious that the beginner would have less of a workload than what her senior colleague has. She may have to spend more time in the class since working in the field can come only when she has learned enough to understand what she would encounter in the field. In the beginning, the student would have more theory and less practical training. But as she learns she would be put more and more on practical training and less and less on theoretical class work.

Training to be a nurse is not the same as attending classes in the University for some other Course. Nursing is an exact profession and requires rigorous training. It would not do if the student is in the habit of skipping classes. No such student is allowed to continue. While it is important to be regular in the class it is equally important to be prepared for the class. A nurse can never afford to be ill prepared or unprepared at any stage of her career this is especially true at the period when she a student and not yet fully a nurse.

Each day in the life of a student nurse, beginning with day one, is planned most meticulously. She has to get up at a specific time. Be in the class at a specific time. Since there are other members in her batch any student who is careless is affecting the work of others, which cannot be allowed under any circumstances. From the moment she wakes up (which has to be at a specific house of day) to the moment she sleeps (which again has to be at a specific hour of the day) each minute of her time has to be spent according to the schedule worked out by the institute. She must follow it most religiously. Or forget about being a nurse.

The Appearance

A nurse is neither a ravishing beauty nor is she a loathsome ugly. A nurse when in uniform is a different entity as far as her looks are concerned. So, how a person looks has little to do with her appearance and capability as a nurse. What are required are good grooming, a pleasing manner and a friendly disposition. Personal cleanliness is a must. So is personal grooming. How a nurse carries herself depends on the confidence she has as a nurse. And that confidence can come only when she has had good training as a nurse. We now take up some of the items of the dress one by one.

Every nurse has to wear shoes. This is to avoid contamination from infection as well as the facility of movement shoes offer. Sandals are out and so are slippers. As in the case of the dress, it is important that the shoes are white, clean and well maintained. The shoes must always be in good, wearing condition. In a nutshell, there should not be anything out of the ordinary in the appearance and condition of the shoes.

Ethics and the Practice of Nursing

At first it may appear irrelevant to discuss the role of law and ethics in the practice of nursing. In actuality, there is nothing irrelevant in the connection, as it would be made clear presently.

It is important to discuss this aspect because as nursing become more and more specialized and complex and as the role of he nurse become more and more important with society leaning too much on the medical profession for relief from the pain of an extremely painful life, nurses are exposed increasingly to situations where they are praised sky high if successful and condemned outright If unsuccessful. The question of law and ethics is part of the profession only from that point of view. Nobody who wants to take up nursing as a career can afford to ignore this aspect. For the study of the question of law and ethics makes her more secure than it otherwise would. The actual importance of this aspect would become clear as we proceed with the discussion.

SOCIAL SCIENCES

We have just noticed that in the case of a number of diseases, it is the societal and communal influence which is the real cause of which the disease is the effect. It is important for the modern nurse to be able to study and learn the interpersonal relationship between family members, members of a communities and different societies. She needs the sharp eyes and analytical mind of the social scientists to watch and see through the secondary aspects and be able to see the real thing. She learns much of this ability through her study of the social sciences as part of her training as a nurse.

To begin with, it is worthwhile to learn the very history of nursing itself. It is worthwhile to learn the very history of nursing itself. By so doing the nurse is able to read the way society reacts to a certain development. How people belonging to different background end up having the same view, and the other way round. She also develops sense of pride in the profession on learning about the sacrifices that early nurse have made for the field. This in turn makes her desire to contribute her mite in the development of the field. The study of psychology helps her enormously. She knows in clear terms why and how people behave in a certain manner.

The Undergarments

The importance of clean and well kept under garments is great for everyone. But in the case of women they have to be extra clean since during the time of the monthly periods they can be crucial from the standpoint of personal hygiene and health. The student nurse must be careful all the time that her undergarments are completely clean and well maintained. Also, no fashionable undergarments (with lace, for example) should ever be worn when the nurse is in uniform.

Brassiere if required should be of the correct size-neither too tight nor too loses. And colored brassiere or old brassiere should never be worn. A person is liable for legal action or protection only when she satisfies all the requirements legal requirements which enable her to be called a nurse. A person who is not a nurse from this point of view is not only protected by the law; she can be subject to serve legal penalty if she practices as a nurse without being a nurse.

WHAT DOES NURSING MENA

Many people think that nursing is confined to the care of the suffering. Nursing does look after a patient who needs looking after. But another basic function of the nurse is also to prevent people from falling sick. A nurse is actively involved in the cure as well as the prevention of a certain disease. It is they who, as part of a health team, do their best in educating society how to prevent diseases from getting hold of its members. She is concerned with equal competence with those who are healthy a those who are not (whom she cares for and helps in curing). Coming back to the history of nursing the modern nurse as we know her owes her origin to the deaconesses and widows of the early Christian church who would go out and visit the patient at his place. These were fully nut rained and untaught ladies but did best in helping their patient face their pain. The lack of training was for the simple reason that there was nobody to train them at that time.

What drove these early nurses to their patients was their desire to serve and be of some relief to the suffering. That desire in fact was the only qualification they had. Came 1633 and the first training institute if one could call it that was opened in Paris, France. This was started by St. Vincent de Paul who was the first person to feels the need of a proper training for nurses. He also established the order of nursing called Sisters of Charity St. de paul had opened no institute to impart training in nursing. He has just instituted the instruction for nursing. The first real institute for nursing was established in the beginning of the 19th century. Though the effort of Theoder Fliedner and wife Fredericka. This institute was part of a small hospital in Kaiser Worth, in Germany, where women were given training in the duties of a nurse. It was here that the great Florence Nightingale began her training in 1851.
